6 things to know about Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week A/W 2012
138 designers are participating: From debutant designers to the big guns, 138 designers are part of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Autumn-Winter 2012 (WIFW A/W 2012), showcasing their collection on the runway and in the stalls.
JJ Valaya is the grand finale designer: The Indian fashion industry’s veteran couturier JJ Valaya will mark two decades of his label with the grand finale at WIFW A/W 2012. His collection is a ready-to-wear line based on the Ottoman Empire, a happy mix of Indian and Western lines.
Designers will support drive against human trafficking: Twelve leading FDCI designers will participate in a special show to raise awareness for a drive against human trafficking as part of FDCI’s CSR activity programme. FDCI will be supporting ‘YouCanFree.Us’ – a not-for-profit organisation working towards rescuing and rehabilitating women who become victims of human trafficking in India.
The twelve designers who will be part of the show (themed “From Ashes to Beauty”) are: Manish Arora, Suneet Varma, JJ Valaya, Tarun Tahiliani, Shantanu & Nikhil, Ashima-Leena, Ritu Beri, Ashish Soni, Rohit Gandhi-Rahul Khanna, Hemant Lecoanet, Ravi Bajaj and Rajesh Pratap Singh. Meanwhile, ace photographer Subi Samuel will display a dozen photographs documenting the transformation. The photos will be unveiled on the day of the show and will later be exhibited in India and abroad.

Tokyo Fashion Week will feature at WIFW A/W 2012: Three Japanese designers- ANREALAGE, mintdesigns and suzuki takayuki- will present a joint fashion show at WIFW A/W 2012. A special delegation from Japan will also be present at WIFW to view Indian designs on the ramp. In addition to the show, products and philosophies of 10 brands representing 10 Faces of Tokyo Culture will be on display at the WIFW.
FDCI will announce a partnership with PETA India: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has been quite vociferous globally against the fashion industry, demanding they stop using fur in their clothes. But in India, the organisation is working with FDCI on a new partnership: “Fashion for Freedom – Boycott Zoos”. Along with PETA and FDCI, actors Gulshan Grover and Mahima Chaudhary want people to know that animals belong in nature, not locked up in cages at zoos. The campaign will extend to FDCI’s next fashion week in September. Great way of making a statement… well-done FDCI!
