Guzaarish fashion primer: Lacey blouses, full skirts and more

November 19, 2010

After Aishwarya Rai Bachchan travelled in a time machine back to the 1970s in Action Replayy, this weekend she seems to be stepping back in time again in her latest film Guzaarish. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Sofia, a nurse to paraplegic magician Ethan (Hrithik Roshan).

Though based in current times, the Guzaarish trailer reflects director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s old-world inclinations. He’s brought in history wherever possible: there’s a lots of old Goa, ornate and carved wooden furniture, even a vintage car, and of course, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s costumes.

Designed by Sabyasachi, Aishwarya’s clothes are understated, yet rich, typical of the Bengali designer.

We bring you some highlights from Aishwarya’s wardrobe, as seen in the Guzaarish stills. (So you know what to look out for during the movie, since Hrithik won’t be dancing much).

  • The actor is wearing low-neck blouse with long sleeves (very Victorian) in maroons and indigos and other such colours in deep tones.
  • The blouses are paired with floor-length, full skirts.
  • Sabyasachi has done some layering with net/ lace (such as on the skirt and sleeves).
  • The Indian touches to the wardrobe are the prints.

  • Even though Aishwarya is wearing minimum accessories, the few she does wear have a boho-chic/ gypsy vibe.
  • Aishwarya’s wearing plain head scarves in several scenes.

  • Her makeup is simple: hair pulled back with a centre parting, hint of curls, and dark matte lipstick or nude lips.

What do you think of Aishwarya’s look in Guzaarish?

I did not really like Aishwarya’s look in ‘Guzaarish’, felt like she is looking old. Though in some scenes she does look good but she could have done much better.

Yes, Aishwarya is looking old in some parts, but I think it’s okay. And anyways, the storyline does mention her to be kinda “old”. 😉

I thought ash’s costumes were very beautiful and elegant. I didn’t think she looked old, but i loved her dark lipstick colours and the dresses she wore were gorgeous :]. Too bad most bollywood movies of this decade wear skimpy tight clothing instead of modest and elegant dresses like in Guzaarish.

The dark lipsticks are a hot makeup trend currently. What’s skimpy? The definition of that changes everyday in Bollywood. 🙂

I dont understand the style – is this what they wear in goa? It looks Flamenco as does the dance she does….Im so confused by it all

Hi Sandra, this style is Portuguese-inspired, but it’s not what most Goa women wear. 🙂 The dance was kinda flamenco with a Bollywood twist.

hey Sandra, Goa is a part of India and that’s why people probably only imagine it to be more “indian” looking. But Goa is actually an island which was settled by the Portuguese civilization. Thats’s y unlike the rest of Indian population which is divided mostly among Hindu, Muslims and sikhs…Goa is mainly of catholics and their names are of their Spainish and Portuguese ancestors. That’s why the culture of Goa has that old victorian style and flamenco dancing is part of it too. Now a days women don’t dress like that but in the movie they were portraying that old, vintage, classical, look which was of an older era. i personally think it was beautiful, very sophisticated almost a gothic feel to it.
